we would need to vastly update and test technology in order to make that happen

thats going to take time and money

it would probably take longer than it would to start to drill and produce oil from areas like the gulf and alaska with technology and equipment we already have available

thats not a short term solution, but i agree that these things should start to be developed for the future alongside us increasing our own oil production

I don't think we can get out of this by drilling in another place alone. I think the only real solution is for someone to find a new way to do things better than what we're doing it now--either with oil or with alternate sources of energy.

You are obtuse, we have the TECH to do this TODAY. This area has the plans in the works for one of the plants in SE Kentucky. Several stations (CTC)in the area used to sell the stuff in the late 70s- early 80s , till the price of oil dropped. It burns pretty well, milage isn't quite as good, but for half price, I wouldn't complain.

It may end up becoming one though.

I was going to pose this thought the other day and got sidetracked--due to the increase in oil prices, we could possibly see the decline of major cities and people driving so much time each way to work. You could see more people choosing to live in smaller cities w/less travel (read: less personal vehicles, more public transportation), and doing more work from home via internet & phone.

You'll likely see more teleconferencing and less international or even long-distance travel if it gets way too costly to do so.

We won't see it all at once mind you, but if things keep up like this, increasing prices at this rate--things could slowly trend to more localized business and travel as a whole. </div></div>
the problem is that many businesses arent set up for working from remote locations and require some office presence......look at like the stock exchange for example

if you work on the floor of any of the exchanges.....you have to be there

in other industries in the city it isnt so much that you commute to the office......but more that you have to commute to see clients, service accounts, etc.......thats something else that cant be done remotely

the other thing to keep in mind expecially in big cities is how many businesses there are that require you to be there

service industries, construction, law enforecement, etc but its too expensive to live in the city so many choose to commute because the money is that much better in the city

long term thats the answer......but the problem is that we need a short term answer as well......and that short term answer is to ease gas prices

the only way to do that is to start drilling here, while we work on the technology to gasify coal and other such methods

I put this up before, they, Shell oil and the government don't talk about this much-

Do you think that would help? The shale is where Canada gets much of it's oil reserve, this was mined before. Old method was 75-90 bucks a barrel, new is 25-30.
"On only a 30 x 40-foot testing area, Shell successfully recovered 1,700 barrels of high quality light oil plus associated gas from shallower, less-concentrated oil shale layers, thus determining our technological design works,"? Shell's website said. "
Who is fooling who? And still you have people hollering "Laskie is the place to git oil."

late 70's early 80's was two technology revolutions ago

we would need to vastly update that technology

secondly much of the vehicles and equipment we use today isnt manfactured here anymore as it was then.......so we also would have to work something out with the auto makers to ensure that a gasified coal would work with what they are using in cars and trucks today, if not we would have to find a way to meet our auto demand ourselves

again......you call me obtuse but you arent seeing the big picture

just because something was feasible 30 years ago doesnt mean it still is today without major changes and upgrades

we have plenty of it available but we have politicians who cave into the environmentalist lunatic and refuse to drill it

for example in 1996 bill clinton caved in to them

using his authority under the antiquities act he designated 1.9 million acres in southern utah as the grand staircase escalante

because of this we now cannot access the vast resources there such as oil, metals and what is believed to be one of the largest coal resverves in the world
